Dr. Nicholson has researched arid lands for many years and has written numerous encyclopedia and review articles about topics related to the climate, vegetation, surface materials, and hydrology of deserts and savannas. She has traveled extensively in the Namib Desert and has focused on this area as an example of the "geophysical system earth", a living illustration of the interrelationships between climate, land surface, vegetation, and animal life. She is also working with Prof. Joe Prospero and others to study the relationship between climate, past climate, and global aerosols. A major project is a nearly-completed book on arid lands, the Table of Contents from which appears below.
