African Easterly Waves have been examined in conjunction with rainfall variability in the Sahel. This includes evaluation of the link between waves, dynamic stability, and characteristics of the African Easterly Jet and Tropical Easterly Jet, and study of rainfall in relationship to the waves. A key question being examined is whether or not wave activity can actually increase rainfall in the region or merely "redistribute" it. Most recent studies deal with evaluating whether comparable waves exist in equatorial Africa.
