Personal Appearance

Appearance is important on television. As you work to optimize your appearance, be guided by news professionals you see on local and network broadcasts. In general, your appearance should be business-like, suggesting professionalism, confidence, and good health. Your appearance should not distract from your message.

Hair should be a medium length. For news broadcasters, it is uncommon for women to have hair that extends onto the back or for men to have moustaches, beards, or shoulder-length hair. Very short hair is also uncommon.

Make-up can be useful for both men and women. Most on-air talent use face powder to reduce shine. Face powder comes in either loose form, which is dusted on with a brush, or pressed, which is applied with a pad. The loose form is recommended. Powder should be washed off after use to prevent clogged pores.

Your weight should be appropriate for your height and body type. Everyone can benefit from regular exercise. If you are too thin or too heavy, you will have a much more difficult time getting a job in broadcasting.

Clothes should not be tight and should suggest professionalism. They should not draw attention to your body. A business suit is appropriate for both men and women. At least when you are getting started, buy classic looks in navy blue, dark brown, etc., that will not go out of style. Many patterned fabrics do not look good on television. The audience should see that you are well dressed, but five minutes after your presentation is over, they should have trouble describing exactly what you wore.
