Day 4

Morning: Resources and Opportunities for Gender Equity
Using materials from the NSF funded program "Plugged In!", the NECUSE funded program at Brown University "Achieving Gender Equity in Science Classrooms", and the NSF funded program "InGear", teachers will explore reasons why girls avoid science. Strategies will be discussed to address these reasons and to explore a teacher's role in stopping this cycle that keeps girls from pursuing scientific interests. Teachers will then be provided with specific facilitation skills they can use with girls such as guiding interaction, tailoring the content to girls and drawing on their individual expertise.

Afternoon: The Use of Automatic Weather Stations
The use of automatic weather stations in place of conventional instruments will be described, including the benefits of well-calibrated and well-sited instruments. We will set up a prototype school-based weather station. Opportunities for government and private forecasters to utilize these data will be discussed.
