14) What kind of radio do I need?

As mentioned above, a simple scanner will receive 137 MHz signals. Doppler shift effects require that the IF bandwidth of the receiver be about 40 KHz for the best signal to noise ratio. Adapting many scanners to the greater bandwidth is a simple process for some but the safest path is to purchase a dedicated receiver. Vanguard Labs, Quorum Communications, and Software Systems Consulting can supply suitable receivers.

S band signals, by their nature, are more difficult to work with than 137 MHz signals. The usual practice is to convert the S band signal to 137 MHz at the antenna but new receivers are coming on the market. They supply a data stream output instead of an RF signal which still requires an additional receiver. These new receivers may also support HRPT but this is speculation at this point.
