Geostationary Operational
Environmental Satellite (GOES) WEFAX imagery is available in
visible light (e.g., as seen in TV weather reports) and a range of
infrared bands including a band which shows atmospheric moisture
content. The images cover the northern or southern hemisphere
(additional close ups, imagery from European and Japanese
satellites, and weather charts are frequently sent, too). GOES
imagery is received from GOES 8 and GOES 9. Many GOES systems are
also able to receive signals directly from MeteoSat and GMS
geostationary satellites.
High Resolution Picture Transmission (HRPT) imagery covers visible
light and 4 IR bands. Visible light images have a 1 km resolution
in comparison to APT imagery (which is sampled from the HRPT data
stream). HRPT imagery is available from NOAA
spacecraft.
