Professional Development
Workshops 2001-2002

Since 1992, the FSU Department of Meteorology has provided professional development opportunities for Florida K-12 teachers in Earth Sciences through the EXPLORES! program.  Through EXPLORES!, teachers learn to integrate the use of weather satellite imagery into the classroom.  Students learn how meteorological systems move and behave, the types of clouds associated with different weather, and the electromagnetic spectrum.

Recently, FSU partnered with GLOBE, an international science education program, to create the Florida Leadership Institute in Environmental Sciences – FLIES.  GLOBE equips K-12 students to take scientifically valid observations of their environment using scientist-developed protocols.  Data collected by “GLOBE schools” are used worldwide in scientific research projects.  By collecting data for researchers, students learn scientific concepts that are in line with the Sunshine State Standards, and increase FCAT performance.

FSU is proud to announce the following Professional Development opportunity for Fall 2001:

EXPLORES! Program: Implementing Weather Satellite Imagery in K-12 Classrooms
September 21-22, 2001: Tallahassee, Florida with follow up meetings one per month through April 2002.

NOTE:This workshop is currently open to teachers from the Leon County, FL public school district. However, it is the desire of this program to train teachers everywhere in both the EXPLORES! and GLOBE programs! Please contact our office or the office of your school district if you are a teacher outside Leon County and wish to attend a workshop.

Workshop topics are related to Sunshine State and National Science Educational Standards and will include:
Basic meteorology
Weather satellite imagery interpretations
Operating a weather satellite receiving station
Thunderstorms and hurricanes
Using weather satellite imagery in K-12 classrooms
Program participants will not be required to purchase and/or operate a weather satellite receiving ground station; they will obtain imagery through the Internet.  Each participant will receive standards-based curriculum on using weather satellite imagery in K-12 classrooms.
