Since 1992, the
FSU Department of Meteorology has provided professional development
opportunities for Florida K-12 teachers in Earth Sciences through the
EXPLORES! program. Through EXPLORES!, teachers learn to
integrate the use of weather satellite imagery into the
classroom. Students learn how meteorological systems move and
behave, the types of clouds associated with different weather, and
the electromagnetic spectrum.
Recently, FSU
partnered with GLOBE, an international science education program, to
create the Florida Leadership Institute in Environmental Sciences –
FLIES. GLOBE equips K-12 students to take scientifically valid
observations of their environment using scientist-developed
protocols. Data collected by “GLOBE schools” are used worldwide
in scientific research projects. By collecting data for
researchers, students learn scientific concepts that are in line with
the Sunshine State Standards, and increase FCAT
performance.
FSU is proud to
announce the following Professional Development opportunity for Fall
2001:
EXPLORES!
Program: Implementing Weather Satellite Imagery in K-12
Classrooms

a teacher outside Leon County and wish to attend a
workshop.
