NIMBUS Technology Satellites

  • Given the success of the TIROS program, the primary objective of the NIMBUS program was to develop a satellite system capable of meeting the needs of the world's atmospheric science research community. The NIMBUS system originally designed as a replacement for TIROS, became the means to test new remote sensing techniques as well as a means to sense the radiative properties of the earth's land masses, oceans and the atmosphere. Other goals of the program included the development of new earth surface mapping techniques, new ground data processing techniques, and to develop the capability to sense atmospheric variables in the vertical (soundings).
