SATELLITES-------
ITOS-NOAA 5--------
SATELLITE DESCRIPTION:

The spacecraft was box shaped (40" by 40" long by 54" high) with three identical (3' by 5') solar panels attached. The satellite was Earth oriented and three-axis stabilized with 3,500 solar cells generating 250 watts of power. The craft weighed 750 pounds. The craft had four antennas: command and beacon, two real-time transmitting and on S-band playback antenna. The external areas were protected by multi-foil insulating blankets.

All sunlit visible and day and night infrared imagery was obtained with scanning radiometers. In addition, a vertical temperature profile radiometer (VTPR) and a very-high resolution radiometer (VHRR) reported cloud top and sea surface temperature. A solar proton monitor detected the arrival of energetic particles for use in solar storm prediction.
